Learning how to knit on your own can be very tricky. The internet is a wonderful resource for information in the form of articles, pictures, videos, and more. The only problem is it’s hard to know where to start. You can spend hours searching for knitting videos and not find any that aren’t above your head. Trust me, I did that! More targeted searches for how to do specific types of stitching and patterns is helpful, but many of them still use language which is difficult to decipher.
To make this whole process easier, start with the basics. Step one is to know a little about the needles and yarn themselves, so that you start with a good product and end with a good product. There are three different basic types of knitting needles, circular, double point, and single point(the most widely recognized). Each are normally made of wood, metal, or plastic.
Wooden needles are most commonly made of bamboo or hard wood. Bamboo is strong, light, and easy to work with. It makes an excellent beginner needle because stitches are less likely to slip while you’re using bamboo. When using small needles, though, bamboo can break, making hardwood needles a better choice for smaller work.
Metal needles are normally aluminum and are the easiest to find. They are heavier than bamboo and although it is very hard to break them, you can bend them. Stitches slip a little easier on aluminum needles than any others, so using super smooth yarn can be difficult. Aluminum needles are generally a good idea if you need to use small sized needles.
Plastic needles are strong, smooth and good for speed. Normally larger needles are plastic to reduce cost and weight, but it is sometimes harder to find smaller needles that are plastic. Stitches do slip on these needles, so they normally come in single points so you don’t lose your work.
There are hundreds of different types of yarn available, but the most widely used are wool, cashmere, alpaca, and acrylic.
Wool is pretty heavy duty, waterproof, and warm. It’s best suited for sweaters that you’d wear over other clothing as it can sometimes be itchy. It is easy to work with and very forgiving, a great choice for beginners.
Cashmere is much softer than wool and very warm. This makes it great for scarves, sweaters, tops, or even socks. It can be pretty expensive, though. The best thing to do is go for cashmere blends as they tend to be cheaper. Cashmere is a bit smoother than other yarns so it is a little bit more difficult to work with for beginners.
Alpaca is even more warm than wool, but not waterproof. It makes great slippers, gloves, socks, and hats but is a bit too heavy for sweaters. I do like using it for hooded zipper sweaters, though. It is very easy to work with and you can find it for cheap if you keep your eye open.
Acrylic yarn is synthetic yarn and is the easiest to find. It also it most often the cheapest so it is a good start. It is easily washable, easy to use, and can be used for any project. It is not quite as warm as genuine fibers, though.
Going to the store to feel different types of yarn is helpful in deciding what you’d like to work with. Cashmere is nice for a luxurious sweater, but a wool blend might be more suitable for a blanket. These are considerations to take into account when you shop for your yarn. I almost never buy yarn from the store, though because you can find great quality yarns at better prices on sites like eBbay or wholesale sites.

dying a cotton/ wool blend dress?
I am looking at a super cute dress at oldnavy, but the color is totally wrong. (light brown) I want a black dress.
Can I dye this dress? (72% cotton/28% wool)
I know that i can pick up some rit dye, and i know to use double the dye, because it is black.
Has anyone attempted/ accomplished this already?
Yes. If you Rit dye be sure to follow instructions and be sure to use white vinegar as instructed. Good luck. Cotton & wool are the best fabrics to dye.
