The simplest explanation of black tie dress is that it means wear a tuxedo. A black tuxedo with a black bow tie is always appropriate. A white tuxedo jacket looks smart if you are attending a formal function that is being hosted during the day or in an outdoor venue. Many people who do not need to wear tuxedos often decide to rent instead of buy. Rental stores are readily available, but call around to get the best price. To rent all the pieces, jacket, pant, shirt, cummerbund or vest, shoes, and bow tie, you can expect to spend between $75 and $100.

If you intend to attend more than a handful of black tie events over a few-year period, you may want to consider purchasing a tux. You can buy a classic wool tuxedo in the neighborhood of $500. Don’t waste money buying a tuxedo made of synthetic materials. Wool is always fashionable no matter the current style trends or time of year you are wearing it. Buy the highest quality wool you can afford and make sure and keep the cut classic.

Rental tuxedos are most typically a synthetic wool blend. These materials do not breathe as easily, but they are cheaper for the rental company to purchase and upkeep. Most people with a keen eye for fashion will quickly notice if you wear a tuxedo made from substandard materials, so if you want to dress to impress, be sure and go with a 100% wool tux in a super 140 wool or higher number. The higher the number; the finer the wool.

If the event is super formal and conservative, don’t take chances on wearing color. A black bow tie and other accessories are always appropriate and sophisticated. While wearing a bow tie with a tuxedo is sometimes an acceptable option, don’t stray away from the bow tie unless you are absolutely certain it won’t look out of place. Think of the reviews of men’s attire at black tie, red carpet events in Hollywood. Many men take chances at these events, sometimes with stellar reviews and sometimes they end up on the worst dressed list. The men who choose to wear a very standard tux and stick to black and white may not be seen as fashion forward but they are also never ridiculed by the fashion elite.

Accessories for black tie apparel are something many men feel unsure of. Cuff links are always a great way to accessorize, but be careful when selecting. Make sure they are not overly ornate and that they match and other jewelry you intend to wear such as a watch. Even your belt buckle should be in the same metallic as your watch and cuff links. Shoes should always be real leather and perfectly polished. Some tuxedos call for a crisp pocket square-most traditionally in white for a black jacket and black for a white jacket.

I have a purple bow tie and cummerbund. It accents very well with the black of my tux. I also think the contrast will look great with her cream/beige dress while keeping you distinctly masculine. I love mine and that’s my recommendation… Purple.
