Are there methods to prevent galvanic corrosion between stainless steel and carbon steel?
I have an 18-8 stainless steel bolt that I want to attach to a 1035 carbon steel shaft. Are there any paints or any other methods that can be used to prevent corrosion from occurring? Thanks
The only way to protect from galvanic corrosion is to avoid the contact between the materials. If it’s a shaft it would be useful to know in which fluid it will be immersed. In order to have galvanic corrosion you need also an electrolyte.
Galvanic corrosion is a function also of the ratio of the area of the two materials. in this case the area of the steel bolt should be very small vs area of the shaft and this is a good thing. if the fluid is not a good electrolyte, not water, then galvanic corrosion could not be a problem.
