Along with bras, panties are one of the basic foundational garments of the shapewear. There are many different styles of panties, and it can be confusing to distinguish one from another. The most common style of panties is the brief. This particular type of underwear offers an individual full coverage in the derriere area. The brief may also be categorized by its rise. The rise is the measurement between the waistband of the brief and the first horizontal seam. Low rise panties have a measurement of 4.5 to 5.5 inches. Medium rise panties have a measurement of 5.5 to 7 inches. High rise panties have a measurement of 7 inches or higher.
Other popular cuts of panties include the bikini cut, boy shorts, and the G string. The bikini cut style does not offer as much coverage as the brief style. Unless the particular cut of the bikini style is low rise, its waistband generally falls between one’s bellybutton and the hip. Boy shorts are ideal for those women who enjoy full coverage. As the name states, the silhouette of this style resembles a pair of short shorts. It offers coverage of the entire buttocks, hip, and the upper portion of a woman’s thigh. The G string offers the least amount of coverage for of this particular grouping. The back of the garment resembles thong underwear in its appearance, and the front is designed to cover only a woman’s most intimate parts. Its cousin, the thong, offers minimal coverage of the derriere, thin side straps, and a triangle front panel. The primary advantage to wearing thongs or G strings is that a woman does not have to worry about unsightly panty lines showing through her clothing.
Panties can be constructed from a wide variety of materials. Many women enjoy panties that are made from breathable materials, such as cotton, because it allows their nether regions to “breathe”. However, there is also a portion of woman consumers who enjoy the luxurious feel of other fabrics, like silk and cashmere. When a woman is purchasing these undergarments, she should keep an open mind about different styles and different fabrics. She just might discover a style she did not previously know that she liked.
