can somebody please tell me how to fix the update error code 80080005 on my computer?

I have been trying to update my computer for I don’t even know how many months now, and all i get is this error code 80080005. It tells me it cannot check for updates. I have Windows Vista Home Premium installed on my computer. I try to fix it but their is all these different files and things that people keep mentioning and i am not the kind of person that knows a lot about computers. at least not on that level. Can somebody please tell me how to Fix my computer in lay-mens terms (i.e. NOT in terms that only a computer nerd can understand)?
