How do you know if leather is created properly according to animal cruilty laws?
I have no money to go buy a pleather skirt, so my mom passed down her leather skirt to me.
I don’t wear real leather or fur and can’t bring myself to wear leather without reasearching it further.
Ps. Not all leather is made from dead stock, some branches, such as a recent indian leather branch, skin the animals alive.
There’s really no way to tell. The species of animal it was collected from can offer some clues. Tortoiseshell is now entirely plastic. The real material was collected from hawk billed sea turtles. Boiling water was poured over the shell, the skin blistered and the scales were torn off. The turtle was then thrown back overboard and supposedly grew another set of scales. Beaver was often caught in an underwater snare. The beaver drowned when it could no longer get to the surface of the water to breathe. Muskrats were also trapped this way. Mink and fox are now ranched and most likely humanely killed. Few people wear the fur of actual big cats like snow leopards because these are endangered species, and possessing the pelt is probably illegal. However, bobcats and Lynx are sometimes turned into coats. Often the animal is caught in a leg trap and this can cause a lot of suffering before the hunter discovers it and kills it. Moleskin is entirely wild caught and moles are killed as vermin using a trap which impales them. Raccoons are hunted by setting dogs after them at night. The animal climbs a tree and the hunters shoot it. Ordinary leather is either the skin of a pig or cow. Millions of cattle are slaughtered for meat and the hides become leather. The cattle are knocked unconscious by a gun which fires a metal slug. They are then hung up on meat hooks and decapitated. Sheep are euthanized by a electric device which knocks them out and are then slaughtered like cattle. Hogs have skulls which are too thick to enable them to be knocked unconscious. They were once grabbed by a rear leg, chained, hoisted up and their throats cut. This caused a lot of suffering and often the rear leg suffered a dislocation as the animal struggled. The injury then discolored the meat when the rear leg was turned into ham. Hogs are now knocked out with CO2 before being cut. Muslims have discovered that if an animal’s throat is cut very slowly it passes into a state of shock before death and this renders the meat especially tender, since all the muscles relax. This is the “hilal” form of butchering. However, it is not a quick death and this practice is open to ethical debate.
