What size NFL jersey should I get?

I have a Brett Favre Authentic that is a size 50 and it fits well. I recently bought a Walter Payton Throwback Premier jersey (size L) and it seems loose and long. Do these Jerseys fit very loosely compared to the authentics? I ws shocked at how large it was. I wear xl t-shirts and have a 42-43 inch chest. Will a Medium be too small for me? I am 5′ 7″ 180lbs and muscular.
