Wallet chains are seen as both a security measure and a fashion accessory. A security measure in that they were first made popular by bikers who used them to stop them from losing their wallets whilst riding their motorbikes, and many travellers also make use of them as the chains connect to their wallet and then clip onto their belt or belt loop, therefore preventing accidental loss, and as a deterrent to pickpockets. Recently, with the upturn in use of mobile phones, and the ease in which there lost, they are now also used to secure these as well as wallets.
They are also seen as a fashion accessory, due to the way in which they can hang down at the person side, working as a piece of jewellery. Becoming popular in the 1970′s due to the Punk movement, and in the 1990′s with the grunge and heavy metal scene, the chains now look to stay in fashion due to them also being adopted by the hip-hop, indie, gothic, skater and emo communities. They’ve become so popular in fact, that they can often be seen at famous fashion events on catwalk collections around the world.
Due to their popularity, there are many different types, from skull wallet chains and biker wallet chains to hip hop chains. You can also select from a large range of different materials, from a sterling silver chain or a gold chain, to a leather chain. A large percentage are men’s chains, although you can also get a women’s chains. As can be seen, there are many types, and it looks as though there popularity will continue to grow.
