Cufflinks are small decorative accessories used to fasten or secure cuffs. You can wear buttons of course, but cufflinks look much better. And they’re now available not only for men but women, too.
On wearing links, they are inserted and locked between the cuffs’ buttonholes. Note that not all cuffs are the same. Some cuffs have to be pinched together while some have overlap ends. Just make sure the two button-holes for each cuff is aligned properly. Either way, cufflinks look great regardless of the cuffs’ design, but looks most exceptional for kissing cuffs.
Its history can be traced as early as the Middle Ages. Back then they were usually worn by the noble class, the prominent of society and the elite. Most probably because they were the only ones who can afford cufflinks during their time. Of course, cufflinks have evolved so much since then. But the notion of wearing them remains. In modern times, it’s not uncommon to see high-profile people – celebrities, politicians, and businessmen – wear cufflinks on special events .
Since its inception, cufflinks are exclusively worn by men. But today, wearing them is now a new fashion trend for women. Yes, there are now designer ladies cufflinks available for women. As women also wear blouses with cuffs, so the need for cufflinks to fasten them has arise. And they look just as lovely men wore theirs. As distinction, you may find that ladies’ cufflinks have more intricate and elaborate designs than men’s.
There are so many designs to choose from. The decorative piece or face of the cufflinks is the visible part. The design can be limitless. Cufflinks can be monogrammed or may be embedded with jewel linings or gemstones.
And why not? Cufflinks add style, elegance, and poise to somebody’s outfit. They also never fail to show a bit of character, fashion taste and personality of its bearer. While they can make men look smart and professionally cool with their dashing suit, cufflinks also bring grace and beauty to a ladies shirt. Cufflinks make an outfit fun and exciting.
Common base material used for cufflinks are either gold, or sterling silver. There are those made of enamel too.
By theme, there are classic, designer, contemporary, and novelty cufflinks. You will find some jewelers offering handmade cufflinks too. This type give freedom and exclusivity in design for its bearer.
By mechanism, swivel post or short post cufflinks are common. There also are short-chain, fastened-two disc, and silk knot cufflinks.
Choosing the right cufflinks to wear may be a bit challenging. Well, the only rule in wearing cufflinks is to match them appropriately with your attire and the occasion you are attending. As they say, there is a pair of cufflinks for every occasion. No matter how formal or casual the event is, you are sure to find a pair that best suits you.
As of today there are a wide variety of cufflinks available. And there price range varies too. Just remember, a decent pair need not be expensive.
