When you live in the land of corn fields, you tend to miss out a bit on some of the exciting things that happen in other parts of the country. We sit at home in the winter watching the surfing contests in California and Hawaii and wonder if we’ll ever even step onto a surf board.

Well, due to some new entertainment items available you now have the chance. A mechanical surfboard simulates the feeling of surfing the waves, BUT you don’t have to worry about drowning if you fall off. Ok…it’s a bit more tame than the real thing but it’s still fun. And since the odds are that we’ll never have any big waves coming our way, it’s the best some of us are every going to get.

Surf Simulators are actually fun for all ages. The operator can rotate the board in a gentle way so even a 4 year old can give it a shot. Or, they can really simulate higher waves for those brave participants who want a lot of excitement.

And speaking of 4 year olds, if you take a picture of your younger child riding a surfboard, it’ll bring a smile to your face forever.

Mechanical Bulls have always been extremely popular but in many areas they are prohibited due to insurance and liability issues. The liability/insurance issue does not apply to the surf machine, making it great for use at virtually any type of function.

So, if you’re wanting to try something different, pick a balmy day, put on Surfin’ Safari and get the simulator started.

Is it true that it it is easier to learn how to surf by using a long board instead of using normal surf board?

My psychology teacher surfs and he told me that if I wanted to learn easily that I should get a long board and then tackle a surf board is this true?

If you are just thinking about starting, you should be looking for lessons, not a surfboard. At least not yet. MOST folks learn lots better on a long board. Over the last 40years or so, I have seen lots of kids start out on a short board, and they mastered it in time, but, a long board significantly shortens the learning curve. Almost any good instructor will start you out on a longboard, it is just a matter of common sense. But, there are NO RULES about how big a board you learn on. Just let me warn you, if you start on something too small, you’ll just end up frustrated, and may likely give up.

Beginners should take advantage of renting boards and wetsuits while taking lessons. If it turns out you don’t like surfing, you haven’t wasted a whole lot of money on gear that you are not going to use. When you are ready to buy, don’t waste your time on line, go to a good local surf shop (or a shop where ever you usually surf) and discuss your options with the folks in the shop. In a shop, they will discuss your size, skill level, local wave conditions and budget.

By the way, longboards are “normal” there are lots of people who are great surfers who ride longboards all the time. And lots of us have several boards, of several lengths and types.
