Can I wear tennis shoes on my Wii Balance Board?

During the wii fit, I would like to wear shoes, but I do not want to damage the board. Can I wear shoes?

The manual instructs that neither shoes or socks should be worn as they pose a possible damage/injury hazard. I also think that if you were doing yoga that having shoes on would not be as pleasant. However, as another person answered there are gripping socks made to be used with the balance board. I have some and think it is better than barefoot since my feet no longer slip in some yoga poses.
